Tithe map of 1842 showing Handcross House

The Tithe Map shows The Fountain at the bottom of the map with the windmill behind, the road junction with Balcombe Lane heading off to Dencombe at the top right, and the London Road to the top left. There have been three mansions on the Handcross Park Estate over the last 180 years and the map shows the earliest one on the right of the London Road opposite where the primary school now stands. The first one was called Handcross House for much of its earlier life.
The Document link shows a page from the catalogue for the auction of the Handcross Park Estate on 10th July 1873. It blatantly promotes the sale by naming the "noblemen and gentlemen" who will be the purchaser's future neighbours. I suspect that for many of us that tactic may backfire! On the next page it is announced that "With this lot will be sold TWO FACULTY PEWS in the Parish Church of Slaugham, one of which, in the best part of the Church, has been recently restored and put into capital order."

We are researching Helen Blake and General Robert Dudley Blake who lived in Handcross House in the 19th century (
Do you know of any images or plans of the original house, or of the Blakes?

I can find no images of either Handcross House or the Blakes, nor have I plans of the house.
The above map of 1842 is the Tithe Map which shows that Handcross House, the nearby cottage, and eleven other parcels of land, plantation, etc, were in the ownership of Robert Blake, and that the occupier was Robert Dudley Blake. I assume they are the same person!
I assume you have found picture #11 which shows a sketch of Handcross House and a map showing the ruins of the house.
Rev. W. A. Dengate’s book “Slaugham” mentions Robert and Helen a couple of times and I have added three relevant pages from the book to the website. To view these select Open Document above. You may have to refresh the page by clicking F5.
Lastly, I assume you have searched the internet and found the copy of Robert’s will.
I trust the above is of some help.
