New sports pavilion at Handcross

Following four years of negotiations a partnership was brokered between the Slaugham Parish Council, Mobil Oil, and AJ’s Family Restaurants which enabled the Parish to receive a brand-new sports pavilion in exchange for a small parcel of land, being part of the recreation ground.
The new pavilion was a replacement for the former clubhouse of West Park Golf Club which had been transferred to the recreation ground shortly after the end of the Second World War to serve as the sports pavilion. See picture #668.
The photograph shows Roger Ray, former chairman of the Parish Council, Brian Eastoe from Mobil Oil, centre, and Allen Jones of AJ’s Family Restaurants.
At the opening ceremony, Mr Eastoe said that he intended to return in 20 years to play a cricket match for a trophy sponsored by Mobil. Does he need a reminder, I wonder!
