Coronation Queen 1953

At a dance in the Parish Hall on 2nd May 1953 a Beauty Queen competition was held for residents of Handcross, Slaugham, and Pease Pottage. The winner would be the Coronation Carnival Queen and be officially crowned at the forthcoming festivities on Coronation Day, Tuesday 2nd June, and Wednesday 3rd June 1953.
Warninglid and Staplefield held their own celebrations.
The winner was Joan Weller from Cotsford Nurseries, Pease Pottage, who received prize money of £3. Her two attendants were Daphne Mitchell and Mary Tomsett, both from Handcross, who received £1 each.
In the event the crown was too small, and a band of ermine had been placed around the base to give it some chance of fitting the Queen’s head. The video shows Joan giggling as a lady tries to fix the crown in place with an assortment of hair clips. One of the attendants, albeit headless, can be seen on the left of the screen.
