Barry Ray Year: 1954 Villages: HandcrossBritish Legion Beauty Queen 1954
Following the success of choosing a beauty queen for the Coronation in the previous year, the Handcross British Legion decided to make this a regular event.
The result was that in November 1954, at the Remembrance Day Dance held in the Handcross Parish Hall, a contest was held to select a British Legion beauty queen for the year.
The winner was 17-year-old Daphne Mitchell from Nymans Lodge, Handcross, having been chosen as one of the runners-up in the previous year.
The runner-up was Joy Payne from Haywards Heath.
Daphne now lives between Bath and Bristol. In a recent conversation she informed me that, in response to a comment in the press, at no time did she say that she planned to enter national contests!
