British Legion Beauty Queen 1955

In November 1955 at the annual Poppy Day dance held in the Parish Hall the judges chose a new Handcross British Legion beauty queen.
The winner was 19-year-old Julia Kelly from High Beeches, Handcross, and the runner-up 16-year-old Gillian Bridges from Pease Pottage.
Local judges included TV actress, Brigid Paterson, and her sister Sheelagh Paterson, from Little Stanbridges, Handcross, and Jonathan Harrison from Handcross who stroked Oxford to victory in the 1954 boat race.

It is very touching to find an article of my mother Julia. Mum died in 2012.
I remember my grandmother proudly telling us in later years that Julie had won the contest. Mum always played this down.
Although she was a beautiful woman she was very modest.
