British Legion Beauty Queen 1957

The November 1957 Poppy Day dance in the Parish Hall produced a surprise in the Handcross British Legion beauty queen contest in that the winner was from overseas! The title actually runs throughout the following year, 1958.
She was 19-year-old Lise Jenson from Denmark, but was currently working at Cottesmore School, Pease Pottage. The runner-up was 19-year-old Sybil Sayers from Three Bridges.
The chief judge was cricketer Jim Parks, of Sussex and England, and he was assisted by Mrs Parks, Alan Hilder, chairman of Handcross British Legion, and Crawley journalist, Peter Avis.
