British Legion Beauty Queen 1958

The traditional Poppy Day dance organised by Handcross British Legion was held in the Parish Hall in November 1958 when the British Legion Beauty Queen was chosen for the forthcoming year.
The winner was 17-year-old Ann Jones from Crawley and the runner-up 18-year-old Even Sloth from Denmark. Last year’s winner was a Danish girl, also working at Cottesmore School, Pease Pottage.
The picture shows Ann Jones receiving the winner’s sash from Maureen Rowe, the current Crawley Carnival Queen.
Looking on is Mrs Nora Ray, wife of Roger Ray, MC for the evening.
