British Legion Beauty Queen 1960

In November 1960 the Handcross British Legion Beauty Queen was chosen at the traditional Poppy Day dance held in the Parish Hall.
The winner this year was 18-year-old Yvonne Taylor from Crawley, with 17-year-old Angela Holmes from Handcross as runner-up.
The chief judge was Crawley professional model, Christabel Leighton-Porter (1913-2000), whose most-famous assignment was to model for the “Jane” cartoons in the Daily Mirror. A short film of Jane’s creator, Norman Pett, can be viewed by searching for “Jane and Pett” on, where the artist can be seen at work sketching “Jane” as she sheds a few clothes. It is all done in the best possible taste!
It is interesting to note, from the attached photograph of the contestants, how the hemline has risen by a good 5 inches compared with the 1957 line-up on picture #1074. Keep watching the website for this continuing story!
