British Legion Beauty Queen 1966

In November 1966 the annual Poppy Day dance took place in the Handcross Parish Hall when the main attraction was to choose the British Legion Beauty Queen for the forthcoming year.
The winner was 19-year-old Shelagh Hore (right) from Nutbourne, Pulborough, and the runner-up 21-year-old Josephine Tiernan from Merstham.
The Sussex and England cricketer, Jim Parks from Haywards Heath, was the chief judge and is seen here just after placing the sash on the winner and presenting gifts to both girls.
At this point I should declare an interest in this matter as Miss Tiernan is now better known as Mrs Barry Ray!
