May Day Festival 1922 Staplefield

Here follows a series of photographs from the fourth and final May Day festival held at Staplefield Common on 24th May 1922.
The procession is heading towards the war memorial on the main road, but there seems to be precious few cars to worry about. Those in the procession are in traditional costumes, but the fashions of the spectators are equally worth looking at.
In the distance is a marquee from which members of Staplefield W.I. served teas. The two local inns were also decorated for the celebrations and supplied refreshments to the visitors.
The Large Version shows a close up of the head of the procession with a lady perhaps casting petals or similar from her basket.
