Handcross Park terrace

The earlier Handcross Park house has been destroyed by fire in 1935 (see picture #16) and this photograph is of its replacement, now the home of Handcross Park School.
The lily pond is quite lovely, but probably the most interesting part of this photograph is the arrow pointing to an upstairs window! There is no writing on the reverse to indicate the reason, but I would like to think that it was a message from the young daughter of the family to her lover to indicate against which window he should place the ladder so that she could elope with him against the wishes of her dastardly father. And my wife thinks I’m not romantic!
