Tulley's Stores, Handcross

A very clear photograph of Tulley’s Stores in the High Street. The post office counter was at the far end of the shop the same location as today, but the rest of the interior was very different. There were two long counters stretching from front to back with the drapery on the left and the grocery on the right. The customers purchased their items at the counter where a few chairs were provided for those who needed them. Many of the provisions were served from large wholesale bags according to weight, and the smell of flour, cheese, and vegetables was all pervading. In a passage just to the left of the post office counter was a hand-operated coffee grinder which contributed to the smell significantly.
