Handcross football team 1913/14

With their amber and black striped shirts the Handcross football team of 1913/14 look a formidable bunch.
From the left, back row: A. Bartlett, F. Burtenshaw, H. Field, B. Picknell, Rev. W. A. Dengate.
Middle row:- Pelt Boniface, J. Bailey, O. Hemsley, W. Pay, Jim Longhurst.
Front row: Wally Bristow, J. Brown, J. Kensett.
With the Old Clubhouse and Tollgate Cottage in the background, the location was clearly in the recreation ground.
My maternal grandfather, Jim Longhurst, served in the imminent Great War and this must have been one of his last matches before he went off to face a more dangerous foe. I am pleased to report that he returned safely to the parish.

Comments:
James Brown, holding the ball, was my grandfather.
At this time he lived at Jessamine Cottage, Handcross with his wife Elizabeth Brown (née Banks).
