Barry Ray Year: 1922 Villages: HandcrossHandcross football fixtures card 1922/23
The Handcross football club fixture card for 1922/23 is quite sturdy but this one is well worn as it has been used to enter the results and scores of the matches as they took place. On the back is stamped “J. W. Brown” and perhaps that was the owner.
The swastikas on the cover meant nothing sinister at that time, as various cultures over the years had used the symbol to mean “Peace”. That changed when the Nazi Party of Germany adopted it in 1920.
To assist anyone using the search facility here are the names of the officials on the card, Captain: Percy Faulkner, Vice-Captain: G. Grevett, Hon. Treasurer: A. Bartlett, Hon. Secretary: J. Vidler, Collector and Gate Keeper: W. Simmonds.
During the season they played 22, won 17, drawn 4, and lost 1. Probably these do not include cup matches.
It’s good to see that so many of the small villages had teams as Warninglid, Staplefield, and Slaugham appear on the fixtures card.
