Is Rock Cottage the first cottage on the right as you come up the road from what used to be the exit from the A23? (Yes! Admin)
If so, I remember the Perkins family, with children named Serena and Clarissa, who spent weekends there. They lived in London. Their mother was a fabulous gardener.
This would be between 1963 and1966, while I lived at Jenners across the road.

My paternal grandmother, Olive Carterette Rowsell, lived at Rock Cottage with her daughter, Betty, after her husband, Charles Frederick Rowsell, died in a plane crash in 1933.
We believe the cottage was bought by a relation, Alan Keith Barr, for her to live in.
We also believe he bought "Bosworths" next door, and maybe he or another family member lived there.
Do you have any information going back this far?

Richard, referring to your family named above, I can find nothing in the general archives for the years you mention. Alan Barr is certainly remembered as living in Bosworths and Olive Rowsell in Rock Cottage. She was referred to as "Auntie Olive" by some.
For a very long time, unlike more recent years, Bosworths and Rock Cottage had been included on the one title deed, perhaps as far back as the 17th century when the younger of the two, Rock Cottage, was built.
I have spent a while delving into the history of the two properties and their inhabitants. See picture #2331, picture #2332, and picture #2333. The results mostly cover the period from about 1840 to 1910.
I realise you probably wanted local history for the time your family lived in the village, but perhaps someone will see this and add a contribution.

Re: Olive Rowsell and the Barr family:
Thanks to Barry Ray for his comments as I never knew the properties were linked in any way!
From talking to Brian Funnell, he thinks the Barrs bought the properties in about 1948 which helps me a lot. We have pictures of me and my sister there which tie in well for timing.
The next time we remember visiting Olive and Betty, probably about 3-4 years later, they were living at Orchard Way in Warninglid, and later moved to Brighton where Olive died in 1965.
Betty moved to Lewes to live with her sister (Olive) Joy, where they both eventually died.
I think Olive lived at Rock Cottage due to the generosity of Alan Barr, but I would dearly love to be in contact with Anna who lives in Slaugham, or Christine who married Geoffrey Barr.
I know they are both alive, and hope that someone could put us in touch?
