A speech at the annual British Legion dinner

Members of the Handcross and District British Legion gathered for the 1957 annual dinner and entertainment held in the Parish Hall.
Richard Sykes had presented a silver trophy to the Legion to be awarded annually to the member who had enrolled the highest number of new members during the year. Mr Sykes presented the trophy this year to Jack Wills of Cottesmore School, Pease Pottage who had recruited the astonishing number of 14 new members.
The photograph of the top table shows the chairman, Alan Hilder, making a speech and with him are Col. Giles Loder, Roger Ray, Richard Sykes, and Lt. Col. Charles Nix.
At that time Roger Ray with his wife, Nora, were running the village newsagent shop which entailed rising at 5.30am. Perhaps that explains why he appears to be having a bit of a nap!
The Large Version displays a ticket for the 1957 supper.
The Document shows four newspaper clippings from the same era on a variety of subjects associated with the Legion.
