Roger Ray with Halifax propeller hub

Here is pictured Roger Ray with one of the four propeller hubs from the Halifax which crashed at High Beeches in 1943. The rusty piece of machinery was found in the woods by Basil Blackman and his involvement is covered in picture #1352.

Barry, I received this today from the Yorkshire Aviation Museum where they have the only surviving Halifax. My email to them was quite a few months ago so I’ve forgotten exactly which photos I sent them but they were a couple from your website showing the rusty engine parts found in the woods nearby.
It does indeed look like that is one of the engines from the crashed bomber.
I think I would have preferred to be flying with steel props but obviously wooden ones worked as well!
Yes, there is every chance that the parts shown in your photos are from a Halifax II. These aircraft had wooden props so they would have rotted away by now. It looks though on one of your photos that the props have been cut off at some time.
The other two photos of a very wet and muddy item appear to be the propeller boss and the reduction gear. You can still see on one photo where one of the props was!
Hope this helps!?
Best wishes
Dr. John I. Wight (Collections Coordinator).
