Dressed as a witch, five-year-old Ruth Stone (née Pattenden), travelled from Handcross to Haywards Heath to take part in a fete which was opened by Cyril Fletcher.
In those days, Cyril (1913-2005) was a popular celebrity mainly due to his appearances in “That’s Life” presented by Esther Rantsen. “Pin back your lugholes” was his eloquent catchphrase!
