Barry Ray Year: 1938 Villages: HandcrossTennis cup for ladies singles tournament
The inscription on the cup reads “Presented by Handcross Tennis Club for Ladies Singles Tournament”. The plaque gives the winner as “1938 N. M. Longhurst”. Miss Longhurst was later to be known as Nora Ray, and my mother!
The club headquarters was on the Hyde Estate and they took over the former estate cricket pavilion as their clubhouse. There were two lawn courts but, occasionally, they travelled to use hard courts in Crawley.
Although it was a very popular club, the support waned in the 1970s and it eventually folded in 1983.
The Large Version shows a newspaper cutting from wartime Sussex when my mother beat my Aunt Betty in the final.
Select Open Document to view a copy of the minutes of the AGM in 1956. A letter of complaint had been received from Mrs Eveline Warren who had kindly permitted the club to use the clubhouse and courts on the estate.
To assist those using the search facility, those named in the minutes were Mr Carter, Freda Hazelgrove, Hepsy Brown, Marjorie Dench, Beryl Chamberlain, Bob Chamberlain, Austin “Tom” Chamberlain, Dave Turner, and Ernie Arnold.
