Headmaster Frank Hawkesworth retires

The headmaster of Handcross School from 1958 to 1969 was Mr Frank Hawksworth. He followed Mr Edward Scofield and was succeeded by Mr Barry Gooders.
Mr Hawkesworth was much respected by the pupils, parents and fellow teachers and was much missed when he decided to retire shortly after his wife, Nora, died in 1967.
He moved to Scotland and in a letter to the school shortly before the Centenary celebrations in 1978 he regretted that due to the long distance he would not be able to attend, but would be there in spirit. He continued by saying that Handcross will always be in his heart and memories of it were held dearly. He concluded by saying, “Tell the people I have not forgotten them.”
