Handcross Women's Institute Golden Jubilee

The Handcross Women’s Institute was formed in 1918 when eighty-six ladies attended an inaugural meeting in the Parish Hall with Mrs Lindsay Smith in the chair. Needless to say all 86 joined the branch on that night!
In 1968 the branch commemorated their Golden Jubilee with an open day in the Parish Hall, where one of the highlights was a parade of members wearing examples of the different modes of dress worn by women over the previous 50 years.
Another celebratory event was the planting of a lime tree in the Handcross Recreation Ground skilfully assisted by the Chairman of the Slaugham Parish Council, Mr Ralph Tulley.
In the centre is Lady Isobel Dundas, President of Handcross W.I., and on the right is Mrs Alice Paterson, Slaugham Parish councillor, Cuckfield Rural District councillor, and Mid-Sussex W.I. Group secretary.
On the extreme left is Mrs Edith Biggs.
The Large Version shows a newspaper article on the planting ceremony.
