Post Office, Pease Pottage

The Pease Pottage post office was situated opposite the Black Swan with the start of Parish Lane on the left of the picture. Of course, nowadays the start of Parish Lane is some 300 yards distant over the other side of the A23 at the mini roundabout. Mr Wimhurst run the post office stores at that time and he was succeeded in due course by Mr Songhurst. The word “Hurst” features in many family and village names in Sussex and means a copse or small wood. The picture quality is not good, but I can spot some eight persons outside the shop.
