Red Lion, Handcross with people and postman

About ten men are hanging around outside the Red Lion in Handcross, perhaps waiting for the pub to open!
In the foreground is a postman with his peaked hat riding a delivery bicycle. He has stopped in the middle of the road to have his picture taken, but it would not be advisable to do that with today’s traffic!
The Large Version shows a close up.

With many thanks to Jennie Pettit, a better copy of this photograph of the Red Lion has replaced the original.
On the extreme left is a glimpse of David Hoadley's shop (picture #98) which, according to the sign, sold ales and stouts brewed by Ind Coope which was based in both Romford and Burton-on-Trent.
On the extreme right is the old stable block which was pulled down when motor transport replaced the horses. Fixed to the building is a dovecote for either doves or pigeons. Could the Red Lion have served up squabs, young plump pigeons taken from the nest a few weeks after hatching?
The former ostler's cottage on the right of the pub has a sign on the roof. It is partly hidden by foliage, but seems to say "Cycle ***or Depot". Supplying services to the cyclists was certainly big business in those days.
