Goldfish pond at Nymans

Shortly before my daughter, Alison, became a member of the garden staff at Nymans I took her around the estate and showed her places not usually visited by the public such as Jack Ridden’s cave (picture #1450), Pook’s Church (picture #44), and the pond shown above. The pond is located just beyond the field overlooked by The Prospect and hidden by trees. In the years between the fire of 1947 and the arrival of the National Trust in 1954 I got to know this pond and marvel at the dozens of large goldfish it contained. Alas there was no sign of fish when I last visited.
The Large Version shows a map of 1873 showing the pond which is numbered 136.
