Note the fair faced brickwork which has since been rendered over in sand and cement by a subsequent owner. The back and left hand flank elevations were of original wattle and daub, timbers and painted black and white.
Around this time, there was a huge fire one night to the back of the house on the area surrounding the back pond and store buildings, and coal house.
Thanks to the police, and later the fire brigade, the fire did not spread to the house. It got to within about six feet of the back wall.
The flames could be seen from the A23 and a passing motorist called the fire brigade!
(For more comments on the house see picture #762)
