Handcross School 1908 (2 of 3) Boys

Compared to picture #1646 this group of boys from Handcross School seems to be slightly younger. The above photograph has the number “5” written in the corner, and #1646 has “6”, so perhaps these are the class numbers.
Again the teachers are Miss Ellen Pearman on the left and Miss Daisy Mason on the right.
Back row: 1 Harold Tulley, 2 ? Stubbs, 3 Alf Stoner, 4 George Lee, 5 Jim or Jack Bailey, 7 Eric Tulley.
Middle row: 3 Bert Sayers, 4 Arch Brewer, 5 Harry Rowland, 6 Ken Jakes, 7 Willie Langridge, 8 Harry Faulkner, 9 George Garner.
Front row: 1 Horace Hobden, 2 “Quinnel” Biggs, 3 ? Stubbs, 4 ? Newman, 5 Ernest Sayers, 7 Frank Pankhurst, 8 Charlie Sayers, 9 Laurence Berry, 10 George Fowler.
A couple of unknown girls in their bonnets have managed to intrude into the picture!

What has the boy in the middle got on his head?
Added by Darren Ray on 25 January 2016
Further to the above question, I am wondering if he had been suffering from measles.
I have added a close up photograph of the boy wearing, what seems to be, an eye shade. Select Open Document to view.
As a young lad in the 1940s I remember catching the virus and being sent to bed with the curtains closed even though it was daylight outside.
One of the less frequent side effects of measles is a misalignment of the eyes, more commonly known as a squint. In rare occurrences serious eye disorders can take place such as an infection of the optic nerve.
The boy is Harry Rowland (1897-1973) who lived with his large family in the pair of semi-detached Oak Cottages, on the London Road, Handcross. On Census day 1901 the residents of the two houses numbered sixteen!
