Fountain Inn, Handcross (3 of 7)

In 1961 Dave and Elsie Davidson became tenant landlords of the Fountain Inn in Handcross, but the successful partnership came to a sudden halt when Dave died in 1977, aged 58.
Elsie carried on running the pub for several years but decided to retired on 9th June 1980 and was succeeded by Stan and Joanna Robinson.
The trade paper for the licensed vituallers, the Morning Advertiser, carried news of the changeover.
In 1974 a conference for parish councils in the Mid Sussex area was held in Bolney and one of the topics covered was the then popular idea of turning pubs into one-bar establishments by doing away with the public bar.
As events have unfolded over the last few decades the problem discussed seems so minor compared with the present-day trend of closing the pubs completely!

In 1975 on one of my trips back to Handcross, Dave and Elsie gave me a set of spirits optics which I used in my bar in Calgary for years.
They were a great couple, Dave would spend hours talking about boxing.
