Fire on Slaugham Common

Sometime in the early 1900s a fire swept through Slaugham Common adjacent to the Furnace Pond. I have no other records for this event and the date has been estimated.
The picture was taken from the area which is now a car park, looking northwards along Coos Lane. The man running down the hill perhaps indicates that houses are at risk further up the hill. It is easy to overlook the fact that the common land also occupies a large area to the east of Coos Lane.
It seems that the landscape of the common has changed dramatically over the years. The picture suggests that it is almost heathland, with few trees and shrubs higher than 10 feet.
