Robert and Miriam Whapham in Police Court

Robert Whapham (1885-1935) was a younger brother of Samuel Whapham (see picture #1696). He married Miriam Annie Knight (1892-1973) in December 1918 but appeared to be absent from his wife and their son for some years, as he was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary. Miriam lived with her parents at Barlands Farm, Warninglid.
He paid maintenance to his wife initially, but eventually the contributions dried up and the couple ended up in the Haywards Heath Police Court, which seems rather strange these days.
Select Open Document to read a newspaper report of the court proceedings, which also includes a case of a car being driven without a valid Road Fund Licence.
The cases must have been quite serious as they were both heard before no fewer than seven learned dignitaries on the top table!
