Handcross Railway Station

Probably unique, this postcard of the old railway station at Handcross has turned up from deep in the archives.
Built during the 1870s to relieve pressure on the main London to Brighton line, the “Handcross Spur” fell victim to Dr. Beeching’s axe in 1968 despite protests from local residents.
From the outset the trains had difficulty in coping with the steep gradient of Handcross Hill particularly in wet weather. The problem was solved by the renowned Russian mechanic, Rail Lopof, who added two hoppers to the front of the train which deposited a measured amount of sand on to the rails.

Love it, wonderful April Fool. Good use of a model railway.
Thank you for the giggle.

Good one,
I believe that Rail Lopof came up with the solution and the hoppers were fabricated by the famous Turkish welder, Ali Minium.

I feel privileged that I have been able to visit this in real life!

I would recognise my Uncle Bill Biggs anywhere.
Best porter ever, and a great bowler for the Hyde Cricket Team.

I haven't given any of the people on my train set names yet but I shall make sure Bill Biggs keeps his!
I shall chalk a set of stumps on the coal shed wall for him to practise his bowling.

Wasn't there a locomotive called "Handcross"?
Added by Sam Butler (née Gordon) on 08 April 2016
Yes, Sam, the "Handcross" locomotive can be seen at picture #466.
This reminds me that there was a aircraft called the Handley Page Handcross. I shall sort out photographs of that without delay.
