Gardens at the Hyde Estate

The next two pages feature a short series of four old pictures of the Hyde estate in Handcross.
Above is a photograph of an ornamental pond in the garden surrounded by plenty of flower borders enclosed by a small hedge of possibly heather.
The Large Version shows an avenue of mature trees with a glimpse of the house with a large porch over the front door as can also be seen at picture #54.
Select picture #1758 to view the other two photographs.

I grew up on the Hyde along with a hoard of other children.
Once a year Colonel Warren and his family would host a party in the grounds for all the estate children. We played sports and games, and had a huge tea with all the trimmings. It was a great time.
In the event of inclement weather the party was moved into the big house, with huge banisters to slide down!
They are great memories of a time gone by.

My grandfather was William Doggett, head gardener at the Hyde.
My mum, Constance Doggett, grew up there and as a small child I remember walking round this pond and the rest of the gardens.
