Archaeologists visit Covert tomb Slaugham church

Another old photograph of the Covert tomb in the church at Slaugham has come to light. Richard Covert died in 1579 and the tomb shows him with his three wives, seven sons, and seven daughters. More details and another photograph can be found at picture #603.

A descendant of the Covert family, Lynne Hutton who lives in Idaho, USA, has located a cutting from the Mid Sussex Times of 31st May 1938. This records a meeting of the Sussex Archaeological Society who met at St Mary’s church, Slaugham to inspect the Covert memorials in the church, and the ruins of Slaugham Place, the stately home of the Covert family.
Richard Covert was Lynne's 10 times grandfather which goes some way to account for her abiding interest in Slaugham, the Covert memorials. and the ruins of Slaugham Place,
