There is sad news from Handcross as the village loses one of its most popular shopkeepers, Graham Patrick “Pat” Manthorpe, who passed away on 16th November 2016 following a long illness.
Pat traded as a family butcher for several decades in Handcross. In the 1960s he took over the butchers shop previously operated by Mr Sandell in the northern end of the High Street. The building is now a private residence known as "Skies". He then moved the business to the other end of the High Street opposite the Red Lion.

This seems an opportune time to reflect on other butchers who have occupied the butchers shop opposite the Red Lion.
The dates are very estimated and I may have missed someone out but during the 20th century there were : 1901 Stephen Foster, 1902 to 1908 Caffyn Brothers (see picture #99), 1908 to 1950 William Field and his son Henry “Harry” Field, 1950 to 1960 William Spink, 1960 to 1970 Charles and Katie Rye, 1970 to 2005 Pat Manthorpe.

I am grateful to Jennie Petit for supplying the advertisements taken from the parish magazine and the Order of Service for both her grandfather’s funeral and also that of Pat Manthorpe. A picture of her grandfather can be found at picture #1628.
