Graftons, Warninglid

On 16th November 1948 the auction sale of “Graftons” in Warninglid took place in Haywards Heath at the Hayworthe Hotel, now offices and renamed Hayworthe House.
Graftons is a substantial thatched property located on the east side of the A23 immediately south of Thorndean Drive and accessed from a slip road.
According to the auction particulars the original “Graftons” was converted from an old Tithe Barn but was destroyed by fire in 1936. It was rebuilt in 1937 using some of the original timbers.
The annual general rates on the property in 1948 amounted to £44 14s 10d, but I expect the current Council Tax is somewhat higher!

In the 1970s the owner of Graftons was a Mr. Ralph BIREN. He was a Company Director with businesses in Brighton and Hove. He lived alone in this eight-bedroomed house.
He would be seated at his desk on which was an old fashioned upright manual typewriter. His sweater would be worn through at the elbows. He would go on cruises and ask me to keep an eye on the house in his absence.
In a rear window he would place a notice which read "To would-be burglars. Don't bother, you had it all last time"
He took a three-month round the world cruise. On his return he gifted me a hand-carved goat's metacarpal bone from Bali. I wonder if he would have given me this if his house had been burgled in his absence! I still have this gift.
Ralph Biren died on the 12th. June 1980.
