Church Lads Brigade -Slaugham Company

A company of Church Lads Brigade was formed around 1911 by the then rector of Slaugham, Lt. Col. Rev. A. H. Boyd O.B.E., M.C. The photograph was taken in the garden of The Rectory, where Rev. Boyd lived. The cadets met for drill at Handcross on Tuesday evenings and at The Old School, Slaugham, on Thursday evenings for PT under the drill instructor, Ted Jenner. They won the Sergison Shield, which was awarded for foot drill by Sussex companies, from 1920 to 1924 and I suspect that the trophy displayed in pride of place in the photograph is that very shield.
