Handcross Women's Institute 60th anniversary

The Handcross Women’s Institute was formed in 1918 and its members celebrated the 60th anniversary by presenting a village sign to the community. More pictures and a video of the presentation can be seen on picture #892, picture #893, and picture #894.
The above scene shows the W. I. President, Mrs Nora Ray, in yellow, and the visiting chair of the West Sussex Federation of Women’s Institutes, Mrs Joan Vance, in blue. Holding the cord ready for the unveiling is Roger Ray, Chairman of the Slaugham Parish Council, who will be receiving the gift on behalf of the village.
The Large Version shows Mrs Ray speaking at the ceremony.

The large cutting refers to my mother being present at the first meeting of the Handcross W. I. in 1918 in a pram. However, she was not born until June 1918 and could not have appeared at either the inaugural meeting in January 1918, not the first “proper” meeting in February. My grandmother was at the meetings and therefore my mother’s appearance would have not been in a pram, but merely as a bit of a lump!
Other members mentioned in the cuttings are: Daphne Morgan, Pat Long, Joan Dick, Hepsy Brown, Annie Kelly, Betty Sargent, Mrs Colbourrne, and Helen Beard.
