Litter picking in Handcross High Street

For many years Sid Sargent patrolled the High Street and Recreation Ground in Handcross picking up rubbish and generally keeping everything neat and tidy. In due course he was succeeded by Brenda Rowe from Staplefield and she still reigns supreme after many years in the job.
Her main job is to keep the street and sports ground free of litter and other unmentionables, but she also empties the litter bins.
The photograph was taken by an unknown passer-by who was amused by the shocked look on Brenda’s face as she withdrew a prosthetic breast, fully detailed, from the litter bin located outside the post office.
Select Large Version to read a newspaper report of a Slaugham Parish Council meeting on 21st July 1966 when the reporter chose a row over the volume of litter in the High Street as the leading subject.
Other matters discussed were a footpath along Balcombe Lane, children’s playground in Slaugham, cricket pitch at Handcross, recreation ground at Warninglid, and a footpath map of the Parish.
