The Green, Slaugham

The sign on the side of the carriage says "Kensett – Draper" and is just leaving to deliver goods for the village shop just visible on the extreme left. The children are playing cricket but the pitch can hardly be described as county standard. The circular patch in the foreground was the site of the village bonfire on Guy Fawkes night, which was always quite a wild affair in Slaugham. The event started with the chanting of “Holla and God save the King. Holla boys holla and make the bells ring”. The church bells were then rung and the fire was lit. The Large Version link shows a close-up of the cricket match.
