Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club 78th Pioneer Run 2017

The Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club was founded in 1924, and promoted the first Pioneer Run to Brighton in 1930.
In 2017 the Pioneer Run was held on Sunday 19th March and was the 78th such event. The event was cancelled during WW2 due to the fuel crisis. The 2001 run was cancelled due to the nationwide outbreak of foot and mouth disease, and the 2013 run was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
This historic event, promoted by Sunbeam MCC Ltd, is a milestone in the veteran motorcycle movement, and attracts the largest gathering of pre-1915 solos, sidecars, and tricycles in the world. It represents a unique opportunity to see so many historic machines in action.
It is anticipated that 370 or more entries were received, and it should be noted that from now on all machines in this event will be 100 years old or more.
Promoted under an ACU International Permit, the event attracts more than 57 overseas entries from France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Eastern Europe and U.S.A. This year more were expected.
The 2017 Pioneer Run was started at 08:00am from Tattenham Corner, Epsom Downs by the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, and from there the 47 mile route followed the A217 through Reigate to join the A23 at Gatwick, then diverting to Handcross, Cowfold and Henfield, to re-join the A23 after Pyecombe Hill.
The route continued through Brighton to Madeira Drive where the first arrivals were expected from 10:00am.
The above picture shows supporters and enthusiasts in the Handcross High Street outside "Broomfield", home to Maureen Green, whose late husband, Christopher "Kip" Green, was a huge motorcycle fan.
The Large Version shows some of the historic motorbikes in the High Street on their way to Brighton.
