Handcross Motor Sports Club (1 of 2)

The Handcross Motor Sports Club was formed in 1948 and folded sometime in the 1960s. The club issued periodic bulletins to its members and the second edition, dated March 1949, can be seen at picture #1587.
The photograph above shows a collection of club trophies and a badge to sew onto items of clothing.
The Large Version shows the shield engraved with:
“Club Trophy. Handcross Motor Sports Club. Presented by A Kenworthy Esq 1953.
Awarded annually for best performance by a member in all club events.
1953 G. Munn 62 pts, 1954 G, Munn 79½ pts, 1955 R. J. Gardiner 109 pts, 1956 C. M. Champkins 75½ pts, 1957 D. L. Goring 81 pts” (7 blank)
Ray Funnell from Slaugham was Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer for the club and initially he approached Col. J. Raymond Warren, the club’s patron, seeking a piece of land suitable for motorcycle scrambling and trials events. The club was immensely grateful to him for offering the use of Shelley Rough in the northern part of the Hyde Estate.
In about 1958 Ray was persuaded to write a history of the first decade of the club and, in particular, the creation and history of its association with Shelley Rough.
