Slaugham Green

A group of four young girls are chatting in the foreground, a small boy is standing in the road looking towards the carriage, and a lady in white can be seen in the garden of Chantry House. The shop blinds can clearly be seen at the post office stores located in the building now known as the Chequers.

Comments:
I have just found out that my late grandfather was born in Slaugham in 1882. His name was William Ernest Hobden, and his parents were Edward and Ellen (née Stoner).
I would be very grateful if anyone has any information about them they could comment please.

Hi Hilary, my grandfather was Lewis, William's brother, I think that makes us second cousins!
Perhaps you could give your email address to Barry and he could forward it to me.

Your research has indicated that your grandfather, William Ernest Hobden (1882-1951), was born in the parish of Slaugham, which, confusingly, also comprises the villages of Handcross, Pease Pottage and Warninglid.
The census of 1891 confirms that he was living in The Street, Warninglid with his parents and four siblings. He was probably born there.
By 1901 they had moved and were all living in Horsham Road, Handcross but William and his siblings then totalled nine! The family was still at the same address in 1911.
You may have already done so, but a search for “Hobden” on this website will be interesting, particularly picture #1647 which shows a picture of your great-uncle, Horace Hobden.

Thank you. Yes, I saw the photo of Horace, how lovely to see photos of your ancestors way back in time.
I also saw the one of his wife Nellie in the Coronation celebrations with her son, John, in his pram!
