William Doggett, basketmaker of Handcross (1 of 2)

William “Will” Doggett Jnr left Handcross School in 1927 aged 14 and went to Chailey Heritage Craft School where he learned the art of basket making at which he became very successful.
Will was the the twin brother of my aunt, Hepsy Brown (née Doggett). My father, Peter Brown, still has an example of Will’s high quality basketwork today.
Will is seen here working in his garden room where he lived due to his medical condition (TB). It seems that he is working on a tray with basketwork edging. The garden room was specifically built at the Gardener’s Cottage on the Hyde estate by Col Warren.
Another photograph associated with the Warren family and Chailey school can be seen at picture #610.
The Large Version shows a collection of Will’s basketwork ready for exhibiting at the horticultural show due to be held in the Red Lion field (now Truggers) on Wednesday 18th July 1934. See picture #2023 due to be uploaded in a couple of days.
