William Doggett, basketmaker of Handcross (2 of 2)

Further to picture #2021 here is an example of the basketmaker’s art. The Hyde estate pony was fitted with a basketwork chair made by Will Doggett Jnr.
The photograph shows Hyde estate worker, Arthur Brown, who used to lead the pony around the estate with the young Michael Warren (1928-2006) seated upon.
Select Open Document to view extracts featuring Will’s basketwork from two local newspapers dated 1934 and 1936. Sadly, Will passed away in 1937 aged 24, no doubt caused by TB from which he suffered for much of his short life.
