“Slaugham Rememberings” by Mrs Ethel Margaret "Meg" Carter, daughter of Victor and Ethel Kensett who lived at the Post Office Stores, Slaugham.
Sunday evenings were the most loved times of the week. It was about the only time that mother and father had to sit still with us during the week. Other evenings they had the bread to set, the shop often was not closed until after eight, or on Saturdays indeed it was ten o’clock.
This was because some of the wives were not given their housekeeping allowance until their husbands were turned out of the pub, and then they only had what the men hadn’t spent. Small wonder that they got into debt. Shouldn’t we like such treatment now?
After tea on Sundays we would gather round the fire and chatter, sing hymns, and often make toffee. This latter seldom had time to set, we were too anxious to test it and once tested, it soon vanished.
Dad always chose “As With Gladness Men of Old”, tune “Old Hundreds”. When I was at last able to make some semblance of tunefulness on my violin I used to play and the others sing. I never was a very good player having little notion as to whether I was playing in tune. That’s queer as I can tell at once if anyone else if off the note!
