Great Storm (3 of 3) Nymans garden, Handcross

Further to picture #2109 and picture #2110 the final video in this series shows the damage caused by the Great Storm of 1987 to Nymans gardens and to the adjoining garden of “Belmont” in the High Street, Handcross.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Great Storm the National Trust has collected many photographs and archive items and these can be viewed at a exhibition at Nymans which runs until 19th November 2017.
To view other items relating to the storm select Groups above and click on “Great Storm 1987”.
On 10th January 1988 the National Trust invited the public to visit Nymans to view the damage to the trees for themselves. Admittance was free, but the visitors were invited to contribute to a storm damage fund.
Most illuminating were Mrs Elsie Cosens’ comments made after the visit: “This had to be seen to be believed. It is dreadful,” Ron Cosens kindly sent me a copy of the document to share on the website. Mrs Cosens is now well over 104-years-old, but was just a mere 74 when the storm passed through Handcross!

Select View Video to watch the 5-minure film made by Roger and Laurence Ray just after the storm.. The VHS tape has degraded during the last three decades and it has suffered from a nasty bout of colour bleeding!

Comments:
It wasn't till a few years ago that I realised that the names of the two adjoining gardens in this film were anagrams of each other: NYMANS & MY NAN'S. (Mrs Nora Ray)
