Clare Cottage, Slaugham

This is a fairly modern photograph of Clare Cottage, which was known as Yertiz until about 1983. The Ponsford family moved in around that time, but I note from the records that a certain CLARE Angrave was the previous occupier! From the 1930s until about 1981 Mrs Ethel Jeffery lived there and her almost daily routine throughout those years was to cycle to Handcross along the park drive. Her husband, Frank, died somewhat earlier. He was the church sexton and kept the churchyard looking immaculate despite the lack of modern machinery.
