Hyde Estate: Dovecote, Cecil Nice, sheep killed

The picture above shows the dovecote at Nymans gardens in Handcross with the part of the main house in the background which was largely untouched by the catastrophic fire of 1947. A similar view can be seen at picture #42.
Yet again, an almost identical view was chosen to photograph head gardener, Cecil Nice, near the end of his working life at the Hyde. The newspaper cutting can be viewed by selecting Large Version. To view a better quality photograph of Cecil, go to picture #667.
Select Open Document to view a newspaper cutting reporting on a case of so-called sheep-worrying, although the result on the Hyde Estate had more tragic results. Here, farm bailiff, Alistair Ewing, surveys the dead sheep.
I am obliged to Jennie Pettit for supplying the picture of the dovecote, and Beverley Ansell for the two newspaper cuttings.
