James W. Brown, chauffeur at Ashfold, Handcross

Further to picture #2167, here is another photograph of my grandfather, James W Brown, chauffeur to the Smith family at Ashfold estate in Handcross.
The car is an Austin 20 from the 1920s.
The Large Version shows my grandfather in another car from the Ashfold garage. The make and model of the car is not identified, but it has two ornate lamps on either side of the windscreen, and an elegant brass bulb horn within easy reach.
Select Open Document to view grandfather in his chauffeur’s uniform. The photograph was probably taken at Postford House, Chilworth, Surrey where he worked for Captain Eric Smith’s mother, Helen Lindsay-Smith, after Ashfold had been sold.
