Harvesting at High Beeches, Handcross (1 of 2)

This collection of photographs demonstrates the hard work that went into farming before modern machinery took over most of the labour-intensive work.
No details were attached to the collection, and I am grateful to Anne Stockton for her help in identifying the workers on the High Beeches estate.
The Large Version shows a close up of the men.
Leading the horse is Harry Furner and assisting on the ground is Eric Stockton.
Receiving the sheaves are balding Charlie Turner Snr and probably Wally Rye wearing a cap.
Select Open Document to view five more photographs. The last picture shows how hard it was for the horses to pull the cart from a standing start.
