Handcross school in sports competition

In 1951, under headmaster Edward Scofield, Handcross school entered a sports tournament competing against teams from Copthorne, Crawley Down, Turners Hill, and Three Bridges. The competition took place at Three Bridges and the home team won the championship shield for the juniors, up to age 11.
Handcross pupils who succeeded in being placed in the top three places in each event were:-
Brian Bolton, Jim Brown, Clive Johnson, David Mitchell, Leslie Newman, Barry Ray, John Sired, Ian Streeter, Frank Weller.
Suzanne Copeland, Yvonne Copehand, Josephine Housby, Margaret Faulkner, Margaret Gates, Sheila Rye, Eileen Snelling, Shirley Wheatland.
For Handcross school, the ages ranged from 8 to 15 as generally there was no secondary education available and many pupils spent all their schooldays in the one school. Only one of the other schools, Copthorne, had a similar system and Handcross beat them in the competition for senior pupils.

The second item is a letter published in the Mid Sussex Times sent by Roger Ray making a forceful comment that the education authorities were not providing secondary education for pupils from many rural schools, unlike those in the towns.
